As a result of the strongly historical discussion of the structure of science and its social role, the history of science has become indispensable educational subject matter. The fulfilment of the widely recognized requirement for scientific orientation of learning seems no longer possible without a conception of the history of science.

Historical topics in science instruction were previously mostly limited to biographical notes. At best, occasional references can be found to the ‘discovery’ of laws considered by science as being of central importance. An explanation for this unsatisfactory situation must be the lack of appropriate instructional resources. This is especially true for the secondary‐school level. Thus, it is worthwhile to bring to mind a project which was completed in the USA several years ago, but which has so far not received much attention in Europe: the History of Science Cases by Leo E. Klopfer, which consists of nine teaching units in the history of science which are suitable for use in instruction at the ninth and tenth grades.

Bisher beschränkt sich die Behandlung geschichtlicher Themen im naturwissenschaftlichen Unterricht meist auf biografische Anmerkungen. Bestenfalls finden sich Hinweise auf die Entdeckung einiger vom Standpunkt der modernen Naturwissenschaft aus für zentral erachteter Gesetzmäßigkeiten. Eine Ursache dieses Defizits scheint im Fehlen einschlägiger Materialien zur Unterrichtsvorbereitung zu liegen. Dies gilt insbesondere für die Sekundarstufe I. Es erscheint deshalb sinnvoll, an ein Projekt zu .erinnern, das bereits vor einigen Jahren in den USA entwickelt wurde, in Europa jedoch nicht viel Aufmerksamkeit fand: die History of Science Cases von Leo E. Klopfer, eine Folge von neun wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Unterrichtseinheiten für den Einsatz im Unterricht des 9. und 10. Schuljahres.

Jusqu'à nos jours, les thèmes historiques dans l'enseignement des sciences naturelles se limitaient à des remarques biographiques. Tout au plus trouvait‐on des notes sur la découverte de lois considérées en sciences naturelles comme primordiales. Le manque de matériel adéquat pour la préparation des cours est une explication pour cette situation insatisfaisante. Ceci est surtout valable au niveau inférieur de l'école secondaire. C'est pourquoi, il serait tout‐à‐fait justifié de rappeler un projet développé aux USA, mais qui n'a pas trouvé de retentissement en Europe. Il s'agit de l‘History of Sciences Cases de Leo E. Klopfer, une suite de neuf unités d'enseignement de l'histoire des sciences naturelles écrite pour la 9^e et la 10^e années scolaires.
