MATAL: the Israel Elementary Science Project‐‐a Retrospective

In this article, the authors reflect on the development and implementation of the Israel Elementary Science Project (MATAL). The MATAL project, initially established in 1968, used British and American programmes as its foundation, but so modified them that they became applicable to the needs of less developed countries. The authors describe the structure and content of their project, as well as their work in teacher training and the development of ancillary and enrichment programmes. It is hoped that the Israeli experience in developing an elementary school science curriculum will be of interest and potential benefit to curriculum workers in other countries also.

In diesem Artikel geben die Autoren Überlegungen zur Entwicklung und Implementation des israelischen naturwissenschaftlichen Grundstufen‐Projektes (MATAL) wieder. Das MATAL‐Projekt‐‐ursprünglich aus dem Jahre 1968‐‐benutzte britische und amerikanische Programme als Grundlage, veränderte sie aber so, dass sie den Erfordernissen weniger entwickelter Länder angepasst wurden. Die Autoren beschreiben Struktur und Umfang ihres Projektes. Sie stellen ihre Arbeit in der Lehrerfortbildung sowie in der Entwicklung von Hilfs‐ und Ergänzungsprogrammen vor. Die Autoren hoffen, dass die israelischen Erfahrungen bei der Entwicklung naturwissenschaftlicher Curricula für die Elementarschulstufe auch in anderen Ländern von Interesse sein werden.

Dans cet article, les auteurs présentent leurs principales idées sur le développement et l'implémentation du projet israélien pour les sciences naturelles du degré primaire (MATAL). Le projet MATAL, créé en 1968 et basé sur les programmes américains et anglais, fut modifié pour être adapté aux besoins de pays moins développés. Les auteurs décrivent la structure et le contenu de leur projet, ainsi que le travail qu'ils ont effectué pour le recyclage des enseignants et pour le developpement des programmes auxiliaires et complémentaires. Ils espèrent que l'expérience israélienne dans le domaine du développement des curricula scientifiques pour le degré primaire puisse présenter un certain intérêt pour d'autres pays.
