Abstract

We are not able to verify a previous report of a reentrant nematic phase below a smectic Al phase (layer spacing d ≈ the molecular length, ℓ) in 80BCB-80CB mixtures. X-ray layer spacing measurements identify the smectic phase in question as A_D for which d > ℓ. This is the usual sequence seen in all strongly polar systems.
