Abstract

The c-director in oriented smectic C samples is free to rotate about the local layer normal. It reorients in sufficiently strong magnetic fields. We show that this orientational freedom depends on the sample preparation. By rapid cooling into smectic C we obtained samples where the reorientation of the c-directors is strongly hindered.
