Abstract
The present study describes the phase behaviour of simple n-alkane-1,2-diols and their mixtures with water. In the water-free state the short-chain compounds form metastable S+A and S+B phases while the long-chain compounds exhibit only the monotropic S+B phase. The addition of water leads to a remarkable stabilization of the liquid-crystalline behaviour.
