ABSTRACT
A ferroelectric polymer liquid crystal has been synthesised with a Sc* phase range of ∼40°C. This paper gives details of the measurement of the static and dynamic properties of this material. Relatively high tilt angles (18°) and extremely high values of apparent spontaneous polarisation (∼1μC/cm2) are reported, together with sub-millisecond switching times 5°C below the Sc* → SA phase transition. Some anomalous behaviour of these parameters with respect to temperature is also described and possible origins discussed.
