The Influence of Heteroatoms on the Amphotropic Behavior of Amphiphilic 1,2-Diol Derivatives

Abstract

Derivatives of n-alkane-1,2-diols containing heteroatoms in different parts of the alkyl chain have been synthesized. The thermal behavior was investigated both in the water-free and the water-saturated state. The occurrence of liquid crystalline phases is strongly dependent not only on the alkyl chain length but also on the heteroatom and its position.
