Abstract
The lists of maximal subgroups published in the “International Tables for Crystallography” [Vol. A, 1st Edition (1983), 2nd Revised Edition (1987), Dordrecht: Reidel] are a precious tool for phase transition applications. Nevertheless a good knowledge of space group symmetry is essential to use these lists with benefit because they include some dimnesses. Several examples are given concerning the conventional cell vectors and origins of the subgroups.
