Diffuse scattering by domains and domain walls

Pages 1-16 | Received 17 Jan 1995, Published online: 19 Aug 2006

Abstract

The application of diffraction methods for the quantitative investigation of domain patterns in ferroelastic materials is advocated. The general diffraction problem is outlined and some hints are given for its solution which is worked out in a special case. The scattering from various types of “typical” domain structures is discussed qualitatively. Some examples are given which illustrate the derivation of (a) the orientation of interfaces and the spontaneous strain from multiple reflection splitting (urea inclusion compounds), (b) the shape of precursor clusters from diffuse streaks (urea inclusion compounds), (c) the lamellar thickness, correlation length and twisting of the lamellae from supersatellites (labradorite) and (d) the fault vectors from the distribution of sharp and diffuse reflections (enstatite).
