Abstract

A theory of electron backscattering from crystalline specimens is given which takes into account both diffraction and multiple scattering, using a general transport theory approach. The theory gives good quantitative agreement with experiment for the variation ot the mean backscattered fraction with thickness, the angular distribution of the backscattered electrons and the contrast of electron channelling patterns.
