Abstract

We present calculations (1) of the climb and glide velocities of edge dislocations in layered structures having the characteristics of smectic liquid crystals (equi-valently Rayleigh-Bénard rolls with froe slip-boundary conditions), (2) of Rayleigh-Bénard rolls with rigid boundary conditions and (3) of the nematic elliptical shear instability (see the preceding paper). Our treatment includes the permeation process hitherto omitted in non-equilibrium structures. Comparison with experimental results for the shear instability allows the phase diffusion coefficients to be estimated. Climb friction coefficients are shown to depend on velocity.
