The inelastic scattering matrix element and its application to electron energy loss spectroscopy

Abstract

Using a simple hydrogenic scattering model, the matrix element with full phase information is derived for the ejection of K-shell electrons from atoms by an energetic electron beam. The scattering kinematics are defined and polar diagrams of the angular dependence of the ejected electron intensity are presented. The effects of parameters which appear in the matrix element on microanalysis by electron energy loss spectroscopy are briefly discussed, particularly their implications for extended energy-loss fine structure. It is suggested that the variation of the phase of the matrix element with direction of the ejected electron will affect inelastic scattering intensities in crystals.
