Abstract

High-resolution lattice images of {100} platelets in diamond have been obtained using an electron beam directed along one of the 〈110〉 directions lying in the plane of the platelet. Fringes of the type 111 and 200 from the diamond lattice were present in most cases and these have been used to make measurements of the displacement of the lattice caused by the presence of the platelet. The mean of twenty measurements of the displacement normal to the plane of the platelet for eight platelets has been determined as 0.39 a o (± 0.04), where a o is the lattice parameter of diamond. The normal displacement of one platelet was observed to decrease to zero within the period of observation; this has been attributed to damage caused by electron irradiation. Three platelets exhibited a significant component of displacement parallel to the plane of the platelet and it is probable that this, too, is the result of radiation damage.
