Abstract

Analyses are presented which concern the annealing behaviour of the dislocation loops which are formed during irradiation. The behaviour of isolated loops is briefly reviewed and calculations arc extended to include cases where approximate solutions to the equations which describe the kinetics are no longer accurate.

If dislocation loops provide the only available sources and sinks for point defects, then predictions based on isolated-loop behaviour are no longer valid. A coarsening process must occur such that total loop area is conserved. The annihilation of smaller loops is compensated for by the growth of larger ones. This process is treated analytically for the limiting forms of the growth equations and numerically for cases where these simple equations no longer provide sufficiently accurate approximations. Comparisons of the predictions with available experimental data are presented.
