The plastic deformation around spherical indentations on a {100} face of single crystals of MgO has been studied with cathodoluminescence in a scanning electron microscope and by optical interferometry. Bd on the experimental observations, a model is presented which relates the movement of the displaced material, the development of the various slip traces around the indentations and the formation of {110}90 cracks.
