Monolayer reconstruction on polar surfaces of ruby

Abstract

Atomic surface profile images of ruby show polar facets developing under electron irradiation at 100-400 kV. Computer-simulated image-matching analyses lead to the conclusion that the facets terminate with a monolayer of γ-A13O4 (spinel-type) structure. This is interpreted as a novel surface depolarization mechanism.
