Grain boundary strengthening associated with Σ = 9 near-coincidence boundary in 〈1010〉 twist zinc bicrystals at high temperatures

Abstract

The effect of the presence of a grain boundary on creep deformation has been studied in zinc bicrystals containing 〈1010〉 twist grain boundaries of different misorientations. It has been found that 〈1010〉 twist boundaries hardly slide but readily migrate during creep deformation. The 51° bicrystal whose boundary misorientation is close to Σ = 9 coincidence showed the greatest difficulty in creep deformation and exhibited the most significant grain boundary migration among the bicrystals studied. The presence of this low-Σ coincidence boundary was found to give rise to a more significant grain boundary strengthening in zinc at high temperatures. In comparison with the result of previous work on 〈1010〉 tilt bicrystals, it has also been found that 〈1010〉 twist boundaries are less effective than 〈1010〉 tilt grain boundaries in grain boundary strengthening in zinc at high temperatures.
