Abstract
Measurements of the lattice parameters of 1T- and 4Hb-TaS2 have been made between 300 and 500 K. Discontinuities were observed and measured at the charge-density-wave (CDW) transition temperatures. Observations of the super-lattices in this temperature range indicate that the interactions between CDWs in adjacent layers are much stronger in the 1T polytype. This interaction favours a three-layer repeat and an incommensurate wavevector, and may account for the presence of the ‘nearly commensurate’ phase in 1T-TaS2.
