Abstract
The X-ray K absorption spectrum of magnesium and aluminium has been measured in order to investigate the possible singularity at the Fermi level. It is found that band-structure effects are crucial in estimating the threshold behaviour of magnesium. A positive threshold exponent is necessary to explain the disagreement between the existing band-structure calculations and the experimental measurements, although the K absorption edge of magnesium is rounded.
