Abstract
The process of mechanical alloying and the phase transformations that accompany ball-milling Cu and Zn powder mixtures have been investigated by 63Cu NMR spectrometry and X-ray diffractometry. Ball-milling the Cu-Zn powder mixtures influences all of the 63Cu NMR spectral parameters. Compared with the results of X-ray diffraction, the 63Cu NMR analysis is more sensitive to the subtle microstructural changes of the Cu-Zn powder mixtures during mechanical alloying. Based on the elemental principles of NMR in metals, some valuable conclusions related to the alloying reaction at the microscopic level have been drawn. The, present work has proved the applicability of NMR analysis to investigate solid-state reactions induced by mechanical alloying.
