Electrostriction coefficients in cubic crystals and their connection to phonon deformation potentials

Pages 359-367 | Published online: 27 Sep 2006

Abstract

Thermodynamical arguments are used to establish a connection between the electrostriction coefficients of cubic crystals and the deformation potentials of their long-wavelength infra-active phonons, i.e., those tensor coefficients which link strain-induced phonon-frequency shifts to the strain components. Crystals with a centre of symmetry and crystals without infrared-active modes are also considered. Specific applications are presented.
