Abstract
The magnetic field dependence of the deformation in amorphous and nanocrystalline Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu ribbons has been measured under different applied transverse fields. Although the saturation magnetostriction constant of the samples is positive, a negative net deformation from the remanence state to the saturated state has been found. These experimental measurements can be explained only by considering the existence of volume fractions with magnetostriction constants of different signs which are not completely coupled.
