Notes
1. While the usual reviews and critiques of an academic work appeared, one novel way of disapproving of a female author was when the word was spread that my house was a brothel, and gentlemen of all ethnicities started arriving on the doorstep.
2. Working on this study was an enjoyable experience for me, although incurring hostility both before and after publication from left and right, white and minority groups, and coming under the scrutiny of security services, especially when interviewing black groups with connections to the African National Congress and the Pan African Congress.
3. John particularly welcomed discussions on ethnicity with Beatrice Drury, Daniele Joly, Cathie Lloyd, Yunus Samad and John King and many others.
