Current trends and future perspectives for medical education in Colombia

Abstract

Colombia is the second largest country in South America. In this article, we provide an overview of medical education in Colombia, including a description of existing public and private medical schools and available undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Medical education in Colombia has evolved through time, following international trends. In addition to 61 undergraduate medical programs, there are 529 postgraduate clinical, 30 PhD, and 131 Master programs in health sciences in Colombia. We identify current challenges and highlight future perspectives for medical education in Colombia.

Diego A. Forero, MD, PhD is Full Professor and Director of the PhD Program in Health Sciences at the Medical School of the Universidad Antonio Nariño (Bogotá, Colombia). He has been involved in the creation and modification of undergraduate and postgraduate programs and has authored 85 international scientific publications.

Muhammad Hassan Majeed

Muhammad Hassan Majeed, MD, is a child, adolescent, and addiction psychiatrist. He is currently a fellow of pain medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has authored over fifty publications; his research interests include medical education and the role of international medical graduates in global health care.

Paola Ruiz-Díaz

Paola Ruiz-Díaz, MD, MSc, is Professor at the Universidad Piloto de Colombia (Bogotá). She is a Medical Doctor, Specialist in Management of Educational Institutions and holds a Master in Education. She has been involved in the creation and modification of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in different universities in Colombia.
