Abstract
1. The cereals in the habitual diets of 10 healthy young adult volunteers were replaced by a high fibre dehusked barley for 3 weeks.
2. Gastrointestinal function and digestibilities of nitrogen, fat, dry matter and energy were measured.
3. There were significant changes in number and type of bowel movements during consumption of the high fibre diet and faecal wet and dry weights were significantly reduced.
4. Digestibilities of nitrogen, fat, dry matter and energy were all significantly lower on the high fibre diet.
