The role of the ozonosphere in the interaction between atmospheric layers as deduced from observations at the Antarctic Base ‘Akademik Vernadsky’

Pages 3187-3197 | Published online: 24 Jun 2011

Abstract

Records of the weather conditions, total ozone content (TOC) and ionospheric parameters measured at the Antarctic Base ‘Akademik Vernadsky’ (Argentine Islands Archipelago) during 1995–2004 are analysed in this paper. The ionospheric region above the ozone hole is found to be characterized by an increased level of disturbance during atmospheric fronts, and the ozone hole geometry is shown to be dependent on cyclonic activity. The results are discussed with reference to a model of internal atmospheric wave propagation through a non-isothermal atmosphere.
