Abstract

Radar images have a peculiar texture, which is essentially finegrained. They necessitate therefore an appropriate specific processing technique, in order to enhance their thematic interpretation. The objective of this paper is to present an original methodology applied to the differentiation of urban areas from VARAN radar images of the town of Luc (in the Var, South-cast of France). Mathematical morphology methods enable the preprocessing of radar images necessary for subsequent textural analysis. Variogram analysis is later used to resolve the confusion between the fine-grain of speckle and the urban grain.
