Abstract
The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer AVHRR/2 on NOAA satellites measures brightness temperatures (BT) at different viewing angles. We propose a statistical method to assess the amplitude of the angular effect in both the original BT's under cloud-free conditions and the estimated sea surface temperature (SST). The method is applied to the Analogue Picture Transmission BT's in AVHRR/2 Channels 3 (3·7/μm) and 4 (10·8 μm). We analyse two independent data sets collected over the same target in tropical Atlantic in June 1987 and December 1988 from NOAA-10 and NOAA-11, respectively.
