The bilingual school of the Slovenes in Austria

Pages 187-197 | Published online: 14 Sep 2010

Abstract

The Slovenes in Southern Austria are a small group under assimilatory pressure. Bilingual education in Slovene and German has been defended vigorously, despite falling census returns and registrations of pupils. The curriculum allocation of languages to subjects is described in detail and the objectives of bilingual education are analysed. The significance of the education system for the maintenance of the Slovene minority in the face of hostility from the majority is very evident and the bilingual school is at a crossroads. The article concludes with an analysis of the sociocultural factors which will determine its future.
