Bilingualism Through the Classroom: Strategies and Practices in Brunei Darussalam

Abstract

This paper is based on classroom observation and research undertaken by the writer. Recommendations for classroom teaching of English as a second language and the national language Malay are outlined. However, the paper notes that improved classroom practice is unlikely to be implemented widely as long as factors beyond the classroom fail to work towards encouraging teachers to their present practice. These external factors which operate to limit change include: a very structured syllabus; a textbook series which encourages the use of grammar exercises and an audiolingual approach to language teaching; a system of monthly tests and formal examinations; and an inspectorate where visiting personnel to schools like to see an emphasis on children's written work and children's test scores. It is considered that, before change can occur in language teaching in Brunei classrooms, head teachers and personnel in the Ministry of Education must also be supportive of such changes.
