A review of parking lot design models

Abstract

The efficient design of parking lots is an important element in the development of the transport infrastructure. The design process often adopted is based on broad measures of parking demand, design manuals outlining the minimum size of the components and the experience of the designer. This process may not result in the best design. It is of particular concern that this process does not provide any quantitative information on the ‘level of service’ resulting from the choice of a parking layout. Models of parking systems provide this assistance. Existing models provide information on the utilization of the parking system, its capacity, the best distribution of parking space use and the delay experienced by parkers. Recent improvements in these models have been aided by rapid developments in computer and graphics technology. This paper reviews developments in models of parking lots.

La conception de parcs de stationnement est un élément important du développement des infrastructures de transport. Dans la pratique, cette conception part généralement d'une estimation très globale de la demande, a recours à des manuels définissant la dimension minimale de chacun des éléments et surtout à l'expérience de l'architecte ou de l'ingénieur chargé du projet.

Ce ne'st pas nécessairement de cette façon que l'on aboutit au meilleur résultat. En particulier, cette ‘méthode’ ne procure aucune indication quantifiée sur la qualité de service résultant de la conception retenue.

Et pourtant, il existe des modèles qui fournissent des données sur les modalités d'utilisation d'un parc de stationnement, sa capacité effective, la répartition optimale de l'espace, les temps d'attente des utilisateurs. Ces modèles ont été récemment bien améliorés par le recours à l'informatique, en particulier graphique. L'article recense et décrit ces améliorations récentes.

Die gelungene Planung von Stellplatzanlagen stellt ein bedeutendes Element in der Entwicklung der Verkehrsinfrastruktur dar. Der häufig angewandte Planungsprozeß basiert auf umfangreichen Erhebungen zum Parkbedarf, auf Entwurfshandbüchern, in denen die minimalen Abmessungen der Komponenten enthalten sind, und auf Erfahrungen der Planer. Das Ergebnis dieses Vorgehens muß nicht den besten Entwurf darstellen. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist, daß dieser Prozeß keine quantitativen Informationen über den ‘level of service’ liefert, der sich aufgrund der Wahl der Stellplatzanlage ergibt. Modelle zur Beschreibung von Parksystemen beseitigen diesen Mangel. Bestehende Modelle liefern Informationen über die Nutzung des gesamten Parksystems, seine Kapazität, die best Verteilung der Stellplatznachfrage und Verzögerungen, wie sie Stellplatzsucher erleben.

Verbesserungen an diesen Modellen sind in der letzten Zeit durch rasche Entwicklingen in der Rechnertechnologie und in der Grafik unterstützt worden. Dieser Aufsatz gibt einen Überblick über Entwicklungen von Modellen zur Planung von Stellplatzanlagen.

El diseño eficiente de sitios de estacionamiento es un elemento importante en el desarrollo de la infraestructura de transporte. El proceso de diseño normalmente adoptado en la práctica, que se basa en mediciones gruesas de la demanda por estacionamiento, manuales de diseño que indican el tamaño minimo de los componentes, y la experiencia del diseñador, no garantiza el mejor diseño. En particular, preocupa que este proceso no provea información cuantitativa acerca del ‘nivel de servicio’ que se obtendria de la elección de un trazado determinado. Los modelos de sistemas de estacionamientos proveen este tipo de ayuda; por ejemplo, entregan información acerca de la utilización del sistema, su capacidad, La optima distribución de los sitios y las demoras experimentadas por los usuarios. Mejoras recientes a este tipo de modelos se han visto asistidas por el rápido desarrollo de la tecnología computacional y gráfica. Este trabajo revisa el desarrollo de los modelos de sitios de estacionamiento.
