RESEARCH NOTE

Primary Teachers’ Attitudes to the Child‐Centred Theory of Education

Abstract

One hundred and six Scottish Primary Teachers were classified into five groups based on length of teaching experience (i.e. OS, 6‐10, 11‐15, 16‐20 and over 20 years). Their summated five‐point ratings of 10 statements relating to the child‐centred theory of education were obtained. The three groups of teachers trained since the publication of Primary Education in Scotland did not differ on the attitude scale, but were more favourably disposed towards the child‐centred approach than the two groups trained before that date. The earliest trained group was less in favour of child‐centredness than the group trained immediately prior to 1965.
