Hydatidiform mole in Ile-Ife, Nigeria: a 10-year review

Abstract

The aim of this study was to review the demographic characteristics, clinical presentation and management outcome in patients with hydatidiform mole at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Case-notes of 46 patients with histologically confirmed diagnosis of hydatidiform mole over a 10-year period were obtained and relevant information analysed. The incidence of hydatidiform mole was 2·4 per thousand maternities. The most common presenting symptom was vaginal bleeding occurring in all the cases, while anaemia defined as Hb <10 gm/dl was the most common complication. There were four maternal deaths in this study, given a case fatality of 8·7%. Hydatidiform mole in this review was associated with unusually high morbidity and mortality mainly due to late presentation, although epidemiology and clinical features were essentially as for previous studies.
