Abstract
Near the village of Ermenonville, east of Senlis in le Département de l'Oise, some 50 kilometres north-east of Paris, the so-called ‘Parc Jean-Jacques Rousseau’ is today (figure 1) but a small portion of a once fairly large estate of about 850 unbroken hectares (say 2100 or so acres) inherited in 1763 by le marquis de Girardin (1735-1808).3
