Trees in gardens: some notes

Pages 173-176 | Published online: 30 Apr 2012

Abstract

The great storms of 1953 in Scotland, 1962 in Yorkshire, and 1987 and 1990 in the south of England demonstrated the vulnerability of trees in gardens, and it is opportune to think carefully about the purposes for which the trees are there; the issues of shelter from wind, frost, and sun; the distribution of age classes, and the perpetuation of the range of species.
