An interview with Ti‐Grace Atkinson: Her speeches and speechmaking

Pages 3-10 | Published online: 21 May 2009

Abstract

Ti‐Grace Atkinson, former president of NOW, New York Chapter, and one of the founders of The Feminists, a radical group, is an influential speaker and political theorist for the feminist movement. Amazon Odyssey, scheduled for publication by Links Publishers this fall, includes some of her key speeches and essays, many of which are discussed below. It will undoubtedly be a major contribution to the feminist literature, and will be of special interest to students of speech communication.

On February 2, 1973, I taped a 21/2 hour interview with Ms. Atkinson. The discussion covered numerous topics, but because it was not intended for publication, the portion transcribed was limited to observations about public communication. To preserve the informality and the tone of an oral history interview, the transcription, except for a few personal asides and comments, was not edited. The tape provides insights into Ms. Atkinson's work as writer and speaker for the feminist movement and her views about the relationships between political acts and public communication.
