Pages 49-55 | Published online: 21 May 2009

Abstract

This essay examines the role of the rhetoric of the Protestant extremist, Ian Paisley, in the inception of the civil unrest in Northern Ireland. Specifically, two of Paisley's rhetorical strategies, political evangelism and confrontation, are examined. Paisley himself is identified as a preacher in the tradition of the right‐wing fundamentalists in the United States.
