Hermeneutic phenomenology: A critique of Leonard Hawes' conception

Pages 58-64 | Published online: 21 May 2009

A critique of the conception of hermeneutic phenomenology put forth by Leonard C. Hawes in a recent article in Communication Quarterly is made. Using Martin Heidegger's definition, it is argued that Hawes has misunderstood the enterprise of hermeneutic phenomenology. An addendum is included which suggests a beginning way to think of the role of hermeneutic phenomenology in the study of communication phenomena.
