One‐parent children's identification with television characters and parents

Because of the nature of their situation, children from single‐parent families may be particularly susceptible to television's impact. This study examines these children's reported identification with television characters, peers, and parents. Children with a parent of the opposite sex were more likely to identify with television characters. The presence of a commenting parent in the viewing situation seemed to “soften” television's effect.
