This essay is a survey of twelve recently published books contributing to the general interdisciplinary movement that, recognizing the immense role of sign systems, and especially language, in human understanding, relationships, and actions, is attempting to find ever more comprehensive and powerful ways of analyzing such systems. All offer insights into language, literature or culture.
