The greater use of modern technology in medical care and public health raises questions about impacts on practitioner‐patient relations. This paper summarizes some important events in the use of medical technologies in relation to the status of the spoken word. A new computerized diagnostic system is explained with respect to the impact this new technology has on communication in medicine and health.
