Abstract
In this Introduction, Richard A. Katula, Communication Quarterly's Education Editor, identifies the purpose and scope of this 1986 Education Supplement. He notes that 14 of the 17 articles included in this issue are devoted to an analysis of the “Great Teachers in the Speech Communication Classroom.” These teachers are extremely diverse in their characteristics and qualities. In Katula's view, some are eccentrics, others are brilliant thinkers, and still others function as moral and academic role models. Katula concludes that while all represent “competence in the art of teaching” and a “commitment to their students,” “each stands as an original.” Katula completes his overview by noting that the final three articles deal with the role of research in formulating teaching strategies, a clarification of the theory‐building for students, and curriculum issues in the teaching of language arts.
