The Americans have to say everything

Pages 413-421 | Published online: 21 May 2009

Abstract

Communication among Americans reflects the value they place on individuality, informality, and egalitarianism. Certain characteristics of the English language influence Americans' behavior when they communicate with other people. They have customary ways of beginning, carrying on, and ending their conversations. Generalizations about communication among Americans need to be tempered by an awareness of differences according to region, gender, and ethnic and religious identification.
