Recreation activity packages at water‐based resources

Pages 163-173 | Published online: 13 Jul 2009

Identifying the sets or packages of activities in which recreational users participate during a visit to wildland water‐based resources will help managers and planners understand user needs, impacts and conflicts. Resident visitors and nonresident tourists define the same recreation site in different ways, in terms of the activity packages in which they participate. Nonresident visitors tend to participate in appreciative and learning packages, while resident visitors select active and extractive packages. Visitor selection of activities that are representative of a particular package is not necessarily dependent upon the facilities provided by the management system.
