Abstract

The increased demand for recreational facilities has led to the introduction of many leisure oriented developments such as ski resorts throughout the United States. This paper presents a model of the impact of ski resorts on the well‐being of residents of communities near such facilities. The model examines the consequences of the ski resort in the context of the process of modernization, the coming of post‐industrial society, the organizational revolution, industrialization, and rurality. The model was evaluated using data drawn from six communities with ski resorts and six without ski resorts. All were located in the intermountain West. Random samples of the residents of each community were mailed questionnaires. The response rate was 55 percent. The data analysis reveals that the presence of ski resorts does increase the political and work alienation of residents. It also produces small increases in some aspects of their well‐being. The results fail to support the position that ski resorts are strongly positive contributors to the well‐being of residents.
