Pages 119-147 | Published online: 13 Jul 2009

Abstract

This article provides an overview of selected theoretical and empirical issues in the economics literature on the travel cost model of recreation demand. Behavioral underpinnings of the travel cost model are examined. Problems are identified which an investigator using such a model must resolve, and some solutions are discussed. Attention is focused on those problems which remain controversial and are in need of further research. Research results from related disciplines that have promise for improving the application of travel cost models of recreation demand are also discussed.
