Abstract
Commitment and ego‐involvement in recreational tennis were measured using scales developed for this study. Factor analysis conducted on responses to the scales identified two factors for commitment (Dedication and Continuance) and two factors for ego‐involvement (Self‐image and Interest). In regressions of age, gender, skill, past experience, tennis expenditures, and first‐order interactions among these variables on commitment and ego‐involvement, tennis expenditures was found to be significantly related to both commitment and ego‐involvement. In addition, age and skill were also related to ego‐involvement nonlinearly. Commitment and ego‐involvement in recreational tennis, although highly correlated, were found to be overlapping but separate constructs.
