Variations of the vertical derived from astronomical observations and El Niño events

Abstract

The residuals of the astronomical time and latitude observations derived from optical astrometry by Mizusawa PZT show a correlation with El Nino events during 1982–1983 and 1986–1987. Decreases of the residuals of the latitude observation correspond to depressions of sea level at Yap Island (9°N, 139°E), and decreases of the residuals of UTI — TAI correspond to depressions of sea level at the eastern Pacific, Christmas Island (9°N, 157°W), and Santa Cruz (EQ, 90°W). These relations suggest the effects of the variations of the geoid due to the El Nino events on those of the vertical at Mizusawa.
