The stochastic and nonstochastic behavior of digital pressure water level gauges is investigated. Analytic expressions for the propagation of random and systematic errors in observable and quasi‐observable quantities into water level values are derived. These expressions are used in turn to perform sensitivity analyses designed to identify the relative importance of errors in each variable. The linear filtering process introduced as a result of the selection of different integration and sampling intervals, and the nonlinear filtering process that results from placing the instrument in a stilling well, are also investigated.
