Abstract

This work calculates three-dimensional transient temperature distributions and corresponding thermal deflections of a workpiece using a novel method. The finite element method is applied to compute the thermally induced deformation of the workpiece over time. The results show that the proposed model can predict the transient convex expansion and subsequent overcut of a ground surface. These computational results coincide with profile measurements. Based on model results and experimental results, the effects of temperature distributions on the flatness of ground surfaces exceed those of external loads.
